The United Kingdom (officially the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland or shortened to the UK or Britain) was a nation-state located on the island of Great Britain and part of the island of Ireland. Between the 19th and 21st centuries, it was comprised of four separate nation-states: England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. London was its capital and most populous city. People or things from the United Kingdom were described as British, although if they were from one of the separate nation-states, they might be known as one of the individual names, i.e. "English" if from England.
