A uniform was clothing worn by an individual to indicate membership within an organization. Military uniforms usually also displayed rank insignia and other distinguishing features to notify others of their allegiance, rank, and purpose within the military organization.
On special occasions, most military organizations also had a dress uniform option available for members to wear.
Some branches of certain military organizations had variants to their uniforms. In Starfleet, the Starfleet Intelligence Special Operations Branch had a variant uniform in service by 2376. (Star Trek: The Cantabrian Expeditions)
