The USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-D) was an Galaxy-class starship in service in the 24th century. It was the flagship of Starfleet and the fifth starship in Federation Starfleet to bear the name Enterprise. (Star Trek: The Next Generation)

In 2364, an alien group tried to conspire against the Federation by infiltrating the highest levels of Starfleet Command. Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the Enterprise-D crew stopped it. In 2366, Enterprise-D archaeologist Marla Aster was killed on an away team mission under chief of security Worf's command. Her son Jeremy, a civilian aboard the Enterprise, was left to live with his aunt and uncle on Earth. In 2366 and 2367, the Borg sent a Borg cube to Federation space, abducting Jean-Luc Picard from the Enterprise and assimilating him to create Locutus of Borg. The Enterprise-D attempted to stop the Borg cube but disabled the ship in the process, delaying them from joining a group of starships at Wolf 359. They arrived to witness the aftermath of the Battle of Wolf 359. The Borg cube continued towards Sector 001, putting Earth on alert. The Enterprise-D crew managed to defeat the Borg using their own technology against them. The Enterprise-D was destroyed in battle in 2371. (Star Trek Generations)
