In some cultures, the male spouse was called a husband, groom, or bridegroom, while the female spouse was called a wife or bride.
After a divorce, the male spouse was often called an ex-husband, while the female spouse was called an ex-wife. The word ex could be used interchangeably.
Where one spouse died, the male surviving spouse was called a widower, while the female surviving spouse was called a widow.
