A planet was a large mass in space, normally orbiting a star in a star system. The Federation categorized these planets into planetary classifications based on size, age, composition, and hospitality towards humanoid life.

To be classified as a planet, the mass usually needed to be sphere-shaped and have a diameter of over one-hundred kilometers. Some planets had natural satellites.
