An escape pod was a small capsule or vessel with maneuvering capabilities that, when launched, allowed a quick escape from a starship or space station. Most starships and stations had more than one escape pod.

Escape pods were activated when a ship or base was on the brink of destruction. All Starfleet starships and space stations had more than sufficient quantities of escape pods to ensure all crew and non-Starfleet personnel, including civilians, could be evacuated.

Noteable history[]

Dr Maria Fernandes, with her children Remedios, Amaranta and Antonio, escaped the heavily damaged USS Auckland aboard escape pods. Shortly thereafter, the Auckland was destroyed. (Star Trek: The Cantabrian Expeditions: "Salvation")

USS Artemis survivors utilized the escape pods in 2364 when the ship was severely damaged and an alleged warp core breach was in progress. (Star Trek: The Prospect Chronicles: "False Security", "Lady Lazarus")

After the Borg severely damaged and boarded the USS Rebellious at the Battle of Wolf 359 in 2367, Elizabeth Singh, Regina Meyer and 9 other survivors escaped aboard escape pods before the ship exploded. (Star Trek: The Cantabrian Expeditions: "An Innocent Time", "Devil's Cube")

Starfleet officer Benjamin Sisko and his son Jake left the battle-damaged USS Saratoga aboard an escape pod during the Battle of Wolf 359. (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: "Emissary") Starfleet counselor Daniel Radke helped Benjamin Sisko and his son Jake off their escape pod and into quarters aboard the USS Worsaae. (Star Trek: The Prospect Chronicles: "The Burnt Child")

During the Battle of Deep Space 9 in 2372 in the Pendragon reality, USS Aotearoa commanding officer Captain Liam de Gaillimhe ordered his crew to destroy escape pods jettisoned from Deep Space 9 in case one or more contained a Founder. Captain Daniel Radke and his crew moved the USS Cuxhaven to protect the escape pods. Radke and his crew won the upper hand, "beating the living daylights" out of de Gaillimhe and his crew, according to Noah Wrightson. Radke supposedly told de Gaillimhe to, "stop giving into his lust for blood." (Star Trek: Pendragon: Other Knights anthology: "Gravity")
