Engineering (sometimes called main engineering) was the area or areas on a starship where the warp drive and impulse drive and their related systems were housed. On a space station, engineering was where any power systems and generators and their related systems were located.

In most Starfleet starships, engineering was located in the secondary hull. It was where the chief engineer, assistant chief engineer, and other engineering crewmembers would spend their working time. (Star Trek: The Original Series; Star Trek: The Next Generation; Star Trek: Voyager; Star Trek: The Prospect Chronicles; Star Trek: The Cantabrian Expeditions)

The chief engineer's office was usually located near the warp core on a Starfleet starship. (Star Trek: The Next Generation; Star Trek: Voyager; Star Trek: The Prospect Chronicles; Star Trek: The Cantabrian Expeditions)

Aboard some Starfleet starships, there was at least one engineering lounge near main engineering. (Star Trek: The Cantabrian Expeditions: "Catalyst, Part One")
