A Doctor of Philosophy (abbreviated PhD) was a degree awarded to an individual who had completed training at the doctorate level. A person holding a Doctor of Philosophy degree was referred to as doctor and held the title of Doctor.
A Doctor of Philosophy degree covered a wide range of subjects, including but not limited to, science and linguistics.
