The Defiant-class was an experimental type of Federation Starfleet escort starship developed in the 24th century as a response to the threat of the Borg Collective. (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: "The Search, Part I")
Defiant-class starships were equipped with phaser cannons. (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine)
The Defiant-class was so successful that Starfleet created variants of the class, including the Peacekeeper-class. (Star Trek: The Cantabrian Expeditions: "In the Still of the Night") It also trialled some of the more experimental technology, like phaser cannons, on different starship types, including the Galaxy-class USS Prospect-A in 2372.
