The archaeology and anthropology officer, also known as the A & A officer, was an officer responsible for studying cultures and societies (anthropology) and their pasts (archaeology).

During the 2360s, first officer Anne Lansing was A & A officer aboard the USS Prospect. When she was promoted to the rank of captain and had an increase in duties aboard the USS Prospect-A, Lansing relinquished the role to Lieutenant Amy Peale in 2371. (Star Trek: The Prospect Chronicles) Incidentally, Peale was the former A & A officer aboard the USS Shabonee (NCC-64332). (Star Trek: Shabonee: "Dirge")
